Marbles

History

No one is sure when or where the first game of marbles was ever played. Roman children played games with sea-rounded pebbles, nuts and seeds, engraved marbles have been dug up from earth mounds built by early Native American tribes and small stones that have been deliberately chipped and rounded have been unearthed at Stone Age excavations. We have been shown how marbles was played in the streets in Victorian Britain, and how it is played in Jamaica. It is a game that we often play in the playground and is still very much alive in Nottingham today.
